St. Augustinus

The initiative for establishing a monastery in Amberg dates back to 1667, when Pope Alexander VII granted permission at the request of Henriette Adelaide of Savoy. While a convent in Munich was established as early as 1671, it was not until 1692 that Elector Maximilian II Emanuel approved the request from the Amberg magistrate to settle Salesian Sisters. These sisters were to instruct girls in handicrafts, virtues, and piety. In April 1692, seven sisters from the Munich mother house moved into temporary accommodation in Amberg. Funding was provided by the revenues of the former monasteries of Gnadenberg and Seligenporten. Between 1693 and 1696, the convent building was erected according to designs by Wolfgang Dientzenhofer, with its interior decorated by stucco artists from Giovanni Battista Carlone's circle. The monastery church of St. Augustine, built from 1697, was consecrated in 1699. Under Abbess Viktoria von Orban, the church underwent an elaborate redesign by artists such as the Wessobrunn stucco artist Paul Anton Landes and the Augsburg court painter Gottfried Bernhard Götz. The monastery was financially well-endowed and founded a branch monastery in Sulzbach in 1753. By the end of the 18th century, the sisters in Amberg were teaching 147 girls in two classes free of charge. In the course of secularization, the monastery was dissolved on March 2, 1804. The nuns found a new home in the branch monastery in Sulzbach. Part of the buildings initially served as a schoolhouse, later as a provincial library. From 1839, the Poor School Sisters took over the remaining monastery buildings and purchased them in 1849.

St. Augustine's Monastery is located in the city of Amberg in the Upper Palatinate, Bavaria, Germany.

The former monastery buildings now house the Dr.-Johanna-Decker-Schulen Amberg. Inside, stucco work from Carlone d’Allio's workshop is still preserved in some rooms. The buildings connect to the choir of the school church with two irregular, three-story wings.
