St. Georg Abbey

The site's history possibly extends to a Roman sanctuary dedicated to Mars. An early medieval church named “Sanct Jürgen vor der Mauer” was built around the year 1000 and rebuilt in 1072 after a fire. In 1135, Bishop Walter I of Dillingen and the Augsburg Cathedral Chapter founded a collegiate church for Augustinian Canons here. An enlarged church was consecrated in 1143, from which parts of the bell tower likely still remain. In 1180, the collegiate church received its own parish district. By the end of the 13th century, the St. Michael's Chapel was built for the parish community. Between 1490 and 1506, the Romanesque church was replaced by a late Gothic new building. During the Reformation, the Augustinian Canons had to cede St. Michael's Chapel to Protestants in 1525 and leave the city in 1537, but returned in 1548. During the Thirty Years' War, the monastery was damaged by fire in 1640. A Baroque transformation of the church took place between 1681 and 1700, replacing the Gothic spire of the bell tower with an onion dome. A new convent building was constructed from 1702 to 1705. The monastery was dissolved in 1802 as part of the secularization. After serving as a military hospital, the former collegiate church was elevated to a city parish church in 1808. In 1944, the complex suffered severe damage from air raids but was rebuilt from 1953 to 1957.

The former Monastery of St. Georg is situated in the city of Augsburg in the federal state of Bavaria, Germany. It is located in the northern part of Augsburg's old town, within the Georgs- and Kreuzviertel, at an elevation of approximately 498 meters above sea level.

The former collegiate church of St. Georg now functions as a Roman Catholic city parish church and forms a parish community with St. Maximilian and St. Simpert. It is listed as a monument in the Bavarian Monument List. The former convent buildings, after reconstruction, have been partially restored to their original external form and now house the parish center.
