St. Georgenberg Abbey (Frankenberg)

The monastery was founded around 1242 as the Butzebach nunnery by Konrad von Itter. Due to its unfavorable location, it was relocated just a few years later, from 1245 onwards, to its current site west of Frankenberg. The nuns moved into the new buildings in 1249, with construction continuing for many years. The monastery, dedicated to Saint Maurice, quickly developed into a stable institution, acquiring extensive property through donations and inheritances. It primarily provided a dignified livelihood for women of the lower nobility and wealthy bourgeoisie. In 1308, the maximum number of sisters was set at 36, although at times over 50 nuns lived there. The 15th century saw a decline in monastic discipline and a reduction in convent members. A reform in 1487 by Landgrave Wilhelm I of Hesse led to a brief revival, but after the introduction of the Reformation in Hesse by Landgrave Philipp the Magnanimous, St. Georgenberg Monastery was secularized in 1569.

The former monastery is situated in the North Hessian town of Frankenberg, within the Waldeck-Frankenberg district. It lies at an elevation of approximately 270 meters above sea level.

The historic building complex, featuring elements from the 13th to the 17th century, currently serves as an administrative branch of the Waldeck-Frankenberg district.
