St. Salvator Abbey

The St. Salvator Monastery was founded in 1289 by Wernhard and Friedrich Pöringer. Initially conceived as a hermitage, it evolved into a Premonstratensian monastery by 1309. A monastery fire in 1632 necessitated a reconstruction of the church, which lasted until 1645 under Abbot Michael Lantzensperger and the Italian master builder Bartolomeo Viscardi. Another fire in 1703 again destroyed the abbey, and the completion of the church was delayed until 1751. In the course of secularization, the monastery was dissolved in 1803. Parts of the monastery buildings were demolished, while other areas received new functions: From 1834, a part of the east wing housed a curacy and school, and a brewery was established in another preserved part of the building. It is believed that the recipe for Paulaner-Salvator beer originated from this monastery brewery. The former monastery church became the parish church of St. Salvator parish in 1902.
