Kloster St. Scholastika Neustift

The St. Scholastika Neustift Monastery, located in the Bavarian municipality of Ortenburg, near Vilshofen an der Donau, serves as the mother house for the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration in Bavaria. It is distinguished by its spiritual focus and the diverse social institutions that have emerged throughout its history.

History+

The monastery of Neustift was founded in 1922. Originally based in France, 50 German-born Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration were forced to leave the country during World War I. Eight of these sisters subsequently began establishing a new community in Neustift. The solemn inauguration of the “Adoration Monastery of St. Scholastika” took place on October 12, 1924. As early as May 1925, a domestic science school was opened, followed by a kindergarten in May 1929. Over the years, numerous other sister establishments were founded, particularly in Lower Bavaria. A dark episode in the monastery's history is the period of National Socialism, when over a hundred Slovenian children were housed in the monastery for “Germanization.” A memorial stele in the monastery garden has commemorated this fate since 2019.

Currently, 38 sisters live in the monastery, shaping their lives according to the Rule of Saint Benedict and dedicating themselves to Eucharistic adoration. They are involved in various areas of the monastery, managing the house, garden, and administration, caring for guests, and engaging in kindergartens, schools, and nursing and elderly care. The monastery church of St. Pius X, whose foundation stone was laid in 1954, underwent a comprehensive redesign in 1999 and 2000, making the space appear brighter and more colorful. Today, the monastery houses the Columba-Neef Realschule for girls and the St. Martin Kindergarten.
