St. Trudpert Abbey

The origins of St. Trudpert Monastery trace back to the 7th century, when Saint Trudpert established a hermitage here. In the 9th century, it evolved into a Benedictine monastery, which was secularized in 1806. Over the centuries, the monastery received support from local noble families and was placed under the protection of Pope Lucius II in 1144, confirming its possessions and freedoms. The abbey extended its dominion in the Münstertal, Breisgau, Ortenau, and Alsace regions, benefiting from silver mining. In the 14th century, the monastery experienced an economic decline, which was overcome under Abbot Paul I (1435–1455). During the Peasants' War in 1525, St. Trudpert was plundered. The Vogt rights over the monastery were initially held by the Lords of Staufen and later by the Habsburgs, making it part of the Anterior Austrian estates. After secularization, it passed to the Grand Duchy of Baden and subsequently into private ownership.

St. Trudpert Monastery is located in the municipality of Münstertal/Schwarzwald in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 468 meters above sea level.

Today, the complex serves as a convent for the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Saint Marc, who acquired the monastery in 1918/1919. The original monastery church now functions as the parish church of St. Peter and Paul. The sisters expanded the complex in the 1920s and began constructing a new monastery church, which was consecrated in 1965. The congregation is active in nursing and is a co-shareholder in a regional network of church-affiliated hospitals.
