Kloster St. Wolfgang

The founding of St. Wolfgang Monastery took place on July 19, 1335, after an earlier attempt around 1320 had failed. Four women, including Maethild, Adelhaid die Riesin, Osterlüet von Snerchingen, and Maethild die Minrin, who called themselves sisters and had presumably already attained monastic status in another convent, purchased a house in Sammlungsgasse. Adelhaid die Minrin financed the purchase with 20 pounds. They elected Maethild as prioress and concluded a contract with Peter von Hewen, the then lord of Engen, and the parish priest of St. Martin, Heinrich von Mühlhausen. In the following centuries, the monastery received numerous donations and endowments, and many daughters of the nobility joined the convent. A diary of Prioress Verena from around 1590 to 1653 documents, among other things, a tax back payment of 400 Gulden, which was agreed upon in 1655 with the mayor and council, Georg Sigmund von Herberstein. In 1724, enclosure was introduced. The monastery was dissolved in 1803 during the secularization, with the Fürstenberg dominion taking over the monastery and its accumulated debts.

The former St. Wolfgang Monastery is located in the town of Engen in the Hegau, a region in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Engen is situated in the district of Konstanz.

After the dissolution of the monastery in 1803 and its takeover by the Fürstenberg dominion, the building was later acquired by the city. Today, the former St. Wolfgang Monastery houses the Engen Museum, which presents a collection of antiquities.
