Steinfeld Abbey

Steinfeld Abbey, a former Premonstratensian abbey, is on a hill in the Eifel region. This complex today houses a secondary school with a boarding school, and a basilica from the early 12th century.
History+
The origins of Steinfeld Abbey date back to 920, with the first monastic settlement established in 1070. In 1130, Premonstratensians took over the complex, which developed into an ecclesiastical center in the German Reich, giving rise to numerous daughter foundations throughout Europe, including Strahov Monastery in Prague. In 1184, Steinfeld was granted abbey status. The uninterrupted line of 44 abbots ended in 1802 with the secularization. After a period of secular use, the complex was re-established as a monastery by the Salvatorian Order in 1923.
