Stetten Abbey

The first documented mention of Stetten Monastery dates back to April 1, 1261, when Pope Alexander IV confirmed the privileges of the resident Augustinian nuns. As early as 1267, Count Friedrich the Illustrious of Zollern elevated the monastery to his family's burial ground. In 1278, it was subordinated to the Dominican Order, which erected the early Gothic monastery church of St. Johannes Baptista around 1280. In the 14th century, the monastery experienced a period of prosperity thanks to numerous donations and remained the burial site of the Zollerns until the 15th century.
