Stolpe Abbey

The foundation of Kloster Stolpe occurred between 1140 and 1153. It was initially established as a Benedictine monastery, with the first monks of the Hirsau Observance sent from the Benedictine monastery Berge near Magdeburg. This foundation was an early result of Magdeburg's ecclesiastical policy in Pomerania. In its early years, the monastery was modestly equipped, owning only the village of Stolpe. In the 13th century, it significantly expanded its possessions through donations and acquisitions, including villages like Quilow and Liepen, as well as mills, which were an important source of income. Towards the end of the 13th century, the monastery faced an economic and disciplinary crisis. A fraternity agreement with the Benedictine monastery Cismar in 1301 was intended to remedy the situation but proved largely ineffective. In 1304, the transition to the Cistercian order took place. The monastery was secularized and dissolved in 1533. It was dedicated to John the Baptist, Saint Maurice, and Mary.

Kloster Stolpe is located in Stolpe an der Peene, a municipality in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. It lies at an elevation of approximately 9 meters above sea level.

Today, the remains of the western lower floor of the former monastery church are accessible as a cultural monument, bearing witness to the site's long history.
