The Thierhaupten Monastery, a former Benedictine abbey, is located in the Augsburg region of Bavaria. The complex, whose origins date back to the early Middle Ages, is now a vibrant center for culture, education, and monument preservation.

History+

The foundation of Thierhaupten Monastery, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, is attributed to Duke Tassilo III of Bavaria around 800. In 955, the abbey suffered looting during the Hungarian invasions but was rebuilt and re-equipped by Gebhard I and Rapoto von Hohenwart. Further destruction occurred in 1504 by the Swabian League. As part of the secularization, the monastery was dissolved in 1803. The monastery buildings were auctioned off and passed into private ownership, while the monastery church was acquired by the last abbot for the parish in 1812. It was not until 1983 that the market town of Thierhaupten bought the complex back and initiated extensive renovation.
