Abbaye De Trizay

Abbaye De Trizay

To be privately owned

The Abbey of Trizay (Sancta Maria de Vado; Trisay, Trisagium) is a former Cistercian abbey in the present-day commune of Bournezeau (formerly St-Vincent-Puymaufrais) in the Vendée department, Pays de la Loire region, in France. It was located about 18 km north of Luçon and 6 km northwest of Sainte-Hermine, at a ford over the Lay, near the D 948 road and the A 83 motorway. The abbey should not be confused with the Benedictine abbey of Trizay in Saintonge.

History+

Founded in 1137 (according to another source, not until 1145) by Hervé de Mareuil as a daughter house of the primary abbey of Pontigny, the abbey, together with L'Étoile Abbey, founded the daughter house of Notre-Dame-de-Ré Abbey (Les Châteliers) in 1156. Otherwise, little is known about the history of Trizay Abbey, which owned several granges but fell into commendam, until the mid-16th century. In 1568, it was set on fire, and it never fully recovered from this blow, probably due to insufficient endowment and the indifference of the commendatory abbots. During the French Revolution, when it was dissolved, it only had five monks.

Layout and Buildings+

The abbey church has been converted into a barn. The choir, which is in danger of collapsing, is flat-ended, and the transepts are gone. Of the cloister buildings, only the outer walls remain. The chapter house has lost its vaults. The refectory and kitchen are integrated into a residential building. The cloister has disappeared.
