Trostadt Abbey

From 1130, the Counts of Henneberg supported the Premonstratensian Order in Thuringia, enabling the foundation of a double monastery in Veßra in 1131. This became the family monastery and, from 1182, the burial site for the counts. Following a fire in Veßra in 1175, it was decided to relocate the canonesses to a separate establishment. The site of Trostadt, approximately three kilometers east of Veßra, was chosen, and the new foundation was named Neuzelle. It subsequently served as a home for widows and an educational institution for the nobility. Another fire in 1244 destroyed parts of Trostadt Monastery. From the mid-14th century, monastic discipline declined, and the Henneberg counts used the monastery's savings to pay off their debts.
