Unser Lieben Frauen Abbey

The origins of the monastery date back to the early 11th century, when Archbishop Gero founded it as a collegiate church between 1015 and 1018. From 1063/64, Archbishop Werner had a new three-aisled, flat-roofed basilica built, where he was later buried. A significant turn in the monastery's history occurred in 1129, when Archbishop Norbert of Xanten transferred the complex to the Premonstratensian Order. During this period, the church towers were completed, and the two-story cloister, fountain house, and refectories were finished. After a city fire in 1188 and a cathedral fire in 1207, the monastery's St. Mary's Church temporarily served as a cathedral. Between 1220 and 1240, Gothic elements, such as ribbed vaults, were introduced without losing the Romanesque character. During the Reformation, the monastery remained Catholic but suffered looting and lost patronage rights. In the Thirty Years' War, it sustained relatively minor damage in 1631. From 1698, a school, later known as the Pädagogium, was established within the monastery, gaining regional renown. Secularization took place between 1832 and 1834, after which the Pädagogium became a state school. The complex suffered damage during World War II, which was repaired in the post-war years. Since 1966, the monastery has been owned by the city of Magdeburg and has been used as a Museum of Fine Arts and concert hall since 1974.
