Unterzell Abbey

The foundation of Kloster Unterzell occurred around 1230 by Hermann I von Lobdeburg, then Bishop of Würzburg. He relocated a convent of women here, which had previously been associated with Kloster Oberzell. The monastery was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Saint Cecilia. During the German Peasants' War in 1525, the monastery was plundered by rebellious farmers. From 1562, it came under the administration of the Prince-Bishops of the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg. A new convent of canonesses was established in 1642. A tragic event was the execution of Superior Maria Renata Singer von Mossau in 1749 as part of the witch hunts. The monastery was dissolved in 1803 during the Bavarian secularization, after which the buildings were sold and the church space temporarily served as a goat stable. After secularization, Jewish families acquired the former monastery and established a new Jewish community and a Talmudic school there in 1822. These economic activities significantly contributed to the merger of Oberzell and Unterzell into Zell am Main and the granting of market rights in 1833. An air raid on March 31, 1945, destroyed the monastery and church, with the church remaining a ruin and the monastery buildings later converted into apartments. From 1971, new ecclesiastical life began when the church ruin was acquired and restored by the Protestant church.

The former Kloster Unterzell is situated in the municipality of Zell am Main, a district of Würzburg, in the federal state of Bavaria, Germany. It is located at an elevation of approximately 173 meters above sea level.

The former monastery church is now a restored ruin used for ecclesiastical purposes. The former monastery buildings were converted into apartments after their destruction in World War II.
