Walchensee Abbey

The foundation of Walchensee Monastery took place in 1688 by Wolfgang Holzer, a Hieronymite hermit from Warngau. He gained the support of the Bavarian Electress Maria Antonia of Austria, who initiated the construction of a chapel and a residential building. The monastic chapel of St. Anna was completed in September 1689. However, the establishment of the Hieronymites met with resistance from the neighboring Benediktbeuern Monastery, leading to ongoing disputes over rights and economic interests. This conflict ultimately resulted in the dissolution of the Hieronymite monastery in 1725. The site then came into the possession of the Benedictine monastery of Benediktbeuern, which had the chapel extended and redesigned in baroque style by 1728. Following secularization in 1803, Klösterl was taken over by the Bavarian state and served for a long time as a parish residence and school. After a period of vacancy and damage, the complex was acquired by the Diocese of Augsburg in the late 1970s and extensively restored from 1981 to 1988.

Klösterl Walchensee is located on the Zwergern peninsula on the western shore of Lake Walchensee in the Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen region, Bavaria, Germany. It is situated at an altitude of approximately 810 meters above sea level.

Today, the former monastery is used as a youth education center by the Diocese of Augsburg. The baroque chapel, with its high altar by Cosmas Damian Asam and the stucco ornamentation inside, is accessible to visitors on Sundays during the summer.
