Wedinghausen Abbey (Arnsberg)
Wedinghausen Monastery in Arnsberg is a former Premonstratensian canonry in the Hochsauerland district, North Rhine-Westphalia, which played a significant role as a religious and cultural center.
History+
The foundation of Wedinghausen Monastery took place around 1170. It was established as a Premonstratensian canonry and dedicated to Saints Lawrence, Mary, and Benedicta. Throughout its history, the monastery church temporarily served as a provisional cathedral during the stays of Cologne archbishops in Arnsberg and was also the parish church of the city. The monastery played a special role in 1794 when it offered refuge to the Cologne Cathedral Chapter and housed the Shrine of the Three Kings. The monastery was dissolved in 1803 as part of the secularization.
