Weißenohe Abbey

The foundation of Weißenohe Monastery, dedicated to Saint Boniface, likely occurred around the year 1102. An aristocrat named Aribo, his wife Gvilla, and a niece Hadamoth are mentioned as founders in a papal confirmation bull from 1109. The monastery was directly subordinate to the Holy See and enjoyed privileges such as the free election of abbots. The first monks probably came from Michelsberg Monastery in Bamberg. Over the centuries, the abbey was repeatedly subjected to attacks, as indicated by numerous letters of protection from popes and emperors. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the community was often small, and monastic discipline as well as the administration of its assets suffered. In 1554, the Benedictine monastery was taken over by the Protestant Electoral Palatinate and converted into a monastic office. The Reformation was introduced, initially Lutheran, then Calvinist. In 1803, the monastery was secularized, leading to its final dissolution.

The former Weißenohe Monastery is situated in the municipality of Weißenohe, near Forchheim, in the state of Bavaria, Germany. It is located at an elevation of approximately 364 meters above sea level.

Today, various buildings still bear witness to the former monastic complex. The former monastery buildings are partly preserved and are used in different ways.
