Zissendorf Abbey (Stoßdorf)

Zissendorf Abbey was a Cistercian nunnery in what is now the Stoßdorf district of the city of Hennef. Today it is run as "Klinik Gut Zissendorf".

The monastery was founded in 1247 in Blankenberg.

In 1563, it was reported that the nuns in Zissendorf Abbey had taken off their habits, abandoned church ceremonies, but had sung in German. They also refused to obey the abbot of Heisterbach. In 1565, the nuns declared that they would not put their habits back on. They wanted to speak their minds, as they did not understand Latin. Thereupon they were interned by the Duke, the abbey key was handed over to the abbess, and the abbey records were handed over to the bailiff of Blankenberg. In 1644, the abbey and the abbey church were destroyed by fire.

In 1654, a new altar was created by the Bonn painter Tilman Krull. The new church building was put back into use around 1670. In 1671, the adjacent cloister was built. In 1673, the entire convent joined the Archconfraternity of Maria-Seelen-Hilf in Bonn. In 1803, the monastery was secularized and used as a manor. In 1934, it was bought by the Cologne cigarette manufacturer Neuerburg.

In 1959, the site was acquired by Caritas for 200,000 DM. In May 1960, they opened the Sankt Mechthild addiction clinic for alcoholic women there.
