Zwiefalten Abbey

The founding of Zwiefalten Monastery took place in 1089, during an era marked by the Investiture Controversy. Counts Kuno von Wülflingen and Liutold von Achalm, considered partisans of the Pope, established the abbey as a retreat and burial site. They were supported by figures such as Bishop Adalbero of Würzburg and Abbot Wilhelm of Hirsau. The official founding occurred on September 8, 1089, after inheritance matters were settled in the Treaty of Bempflingen. The first monks came from the reformed Hirsau Monastery. By 1091, Zwiefalten had achieved the status of an independent abbey with free election of its abbot and Vogt. To ensure its independence, the monastery was placed under the protection of the Apostolic See in 1092, a status confirmed by Pope Urban II in 1093. After the founders' deaths, a large part of their inheritance passed to the monastery. The first monastery church was consecrated in 1109. Under Abbot Ulrich I (1095–1139), Zwiefalten sent monks to found other monasteries, including Kladrau and Neresheim. A close connection to the Counts of Berg led to numerous donations. A women's monastery was also established in Zwiefalten during the Middle Ages. Valuable artworks from this period, such as an 11th-century staurotheke and a 12th-century reliquary cross, have been preserved. The monastery experienced its first golden age between 1095 and 1139, developing into a regional center for culture and religion. Abbot Berthold († 1169) became known as a chronicler and promoted the scriptorium and library. Hildegard von Bingen visited Zwiefalten around 1170, and it is believed that the Liber Scivias was written there. Abbot Ernst (1141–1146) died during the Second Crusade and was later venerated as a martyr. The dissolution of the monastery occurred in 1802 as part of the secularization.

Zwiefalten Monastery is situated in the municipality of Zwiefalten in the Reutlingen district, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is located at an elevation of approximately 562 meters above sea level on the southern foothills of the Swabian Jura.

The historic monastery complex now houses a psychiatric clinic, thus remaining a vibrant place, albeit serving a different function than in its monastic past.
