Monastery Church Lehnin

The foundation of Lehnin Monastery took place in 1180 under Margrave Otto I of Brandenburg, with the construction of the church beginning around 1190. As the first monastic foundation in the March of Brandenburg, it served the Ascanians as a house monastery and burial site. The Cistercian abbey, dedicated to Mary, played a significant role in the development of the young March of Brandenburg. It was the mother monastery for further Cistercian foundations such as Paradies, Mariensee/Chorin, and Himmelpfort. In the course of the Reformation, the monastery was secularized in 1542. The church is considered one of the most important Romanesque-Gothic brick buildings in the region, and its reconstruction in the late 19th century is regarded as an early achievement in monument preservation.

The monastery church is located in the municipality of Kloster Lehnin in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district, Brandenburg, Germany. The complex is situated in a forested and water-rich environment, approximately 700 meters from Klostersee, in the center of the Zauche plateau.

Today, the former monastery has housed the Luise-Henriette-Stift since 1911, which continues the monastic tradition with diaconal facilities in the areas of care, medicine, and education. The monastery church itself is an outstanding example of Romanesque and early Gothic brick architecture and is a protected monument.
