Klosterruine Brunnenburg
The monastery ruin Brunnenburg, a designated cultural monument in Germany, is situated above the Lahn Valley. Of the former Benedictine nunnery, only parts of the choir, the westwork, and the side aisles remain today, bearing witness to its historical significance.
History+
Around the year 1200, the Brunnenburg monastery was founded by Gisela von Katzenelnbogen, a count's daughter and niece of the Count of Arnstein. The name “Brunenburc” first appeared in a document in 1224. Arnstein Abbey, originally a Premonstratensian monastery, has a close connection to the founding of Brunnenburg. In the course of the Reformation, Brunnenburg monastery was dissolved in 1542 and has since fallen into the ruin visible today.

Today, the monastery ruin Brunnenburg is a historical site accessible by several hiking trails, including the Lahnhöhenweg, the Lahn-Camino (a section of the Way of St. James), the long-distance hiking trail E1, and the regional Klosterweg. From the ruins, there is a wide view over the Lahn Valley and the opposing ridges.
