Hasungen Abbey (Ruin) (Castlehasungen)

The origins of the monastery date back to the early 11th century, when the itinerant preacher Heimerad worked on the Hasunger Mountain, and after his death in 1019, a chapel was erected over his grave. In 1074, Archbishop Siegfried I of Mainz founded a canonry, which was converted into a Benedictine monastery of the Hirsau Observance in 1080/81. Despite initial political tensions under the first abbot Lampert of Hersfeld, the monastery flourished and acquired extensive property.
