Limburg Abbey

The history of Limburg dates back to the Celtic period, when a hilltop settlement existed here. In the 9th century, the Salians built a castle at this strategically important location. From 1025, Limburg was re-established as a Benedictine abbey and converted into a Salian proprietary monastery. The entire church was consecrated in 1042 under the patronage of the Holy Cross, the Virgin Mary, John the Evangelist, and Saint Lucy. The monastery existed until its dissolution and secularization in 1574.

The Limburg monastery ruin is situated on the Limburgberg, northeast of the summit, at an elevation of approximately 249 meters above sea level. It is prominently located above the southern bank of the Isenach, which breaks through the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest. The site is accessible from the Bad Dürkheim districts of Grethen, Hausen, and Seebach.

Today, Limburg presents itself as an impressive ruined landscape, bearing witness to the former grandeur of the Benedictine abbey. The remains of the Romanesque architecture are a significant monument and a popular attraction for visitors.
