Nimbschen Abbey

In 1243, Margrave Heinrich the Illustrious founded the Marienthron nunnery near Torgau as a memorial foundation for his deceased wife. It received extensive landholdings and was incorporated into the Cistercian Order in 1244, with the male monastery of Pforta serving as its mother house. Around 1250, the nuns relocated to Grimma, occupying the hospital and parish there. Before 1291, another move took place to a newly constructed monastery near Nimbschen. In the late Middle Ages, the abbey possessed extensive property, but faced economic difficulties from the 14th century onwards.
