Ober-Werbe Abbey (Ruin)

The origins of Werbe Monastery likely date back to 1038. However, the first written records appear only in 1124/1125, when Pope Honorius II placed the monastery, dedicated to Saint Mary and Peter, under his protection. Initially a Benedictine monastic convent, it was subordinated to Corvey Abbey in 1155. By 1207 at the latest, it transformed into a Benedictine nunnery. In 1494, a reform following the rules of the Bursfelde Congregation was introduced by nuns from Vinnenberg. Following the Reformation in the County of Waldeck, the monastery was dissolved in 1537 by Count Philipp IV of Waldeck-Wildungen. The last abbess married the Protestant pastor Kaspar Jäger in 1535. In 1553, Count Philipp sold the complex to Wilhelm Wolff von Gudenberg.
