Rosenthal Abbey

The existence of Rosenthal Monastery is documented from at least 1251. It was founded under the patronage of Mary and served as a spiritual home for noble nuns. In the 13th and 14th centuries, the monastery expanded its possessions through donations and purchases. From 1304, it was under the supervision and pastoral care of Himmerod Monastery. Over the centuries, various construction measures and renovations of the buildings took place. In 1784, parts of the church and an adjacent wing were demolished; a new building was consecrated in 1787. The monastery was dissolved in 1802 as part of the secularization, after which the buildings were put up for auction and demolition in 1804.

The monastery ruin Rosenthal is situated in the Cochem-Zell district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 228 meters above sea level.

Today, only a few wall remnants of the former monastery buildings remain. A small chapel dedicated to Mary is located at the site of the former high altar.
