The monastery ruin of Stadtroda, once a significant Cistercian nunnery, is located in the Saale-Holzland region of Thuringia. The impressive remains of the monastery church, built from red sandstone, bear witness to its former grandeur and are now one of the largest monastery ruins in the region.

History+

The monastery of Roda was founded around 1245 as a proprietary monastery of the Lobdeburger family, who also used it as a burial site. It was consecrated to Saint Mary and Saint John and was inhabited by Cistercian nuns. The monastery church, constructed in the Gothic style, showed clear influences from the reform movements of Hirsau and Maulbronn. In the course of the Reformation, the monastery was dissolved in 1534. After its destruction during the Thirty Years' War in 1638, the church fell into ruin.
