History+
In 1571, the castle became the ancestral seat of the Mac Conmara, the Earls of West Clancullen. Donnchadh Mac Conmara was a leader in the Irish Rebellion of 1641. Following the English conquest of Ireland between 1649 and 1653, the castle was confiscated and passed into the possession of Arthur Smith. However, by 1660, Knappogue was returned to the Mac Conmaras.
