Royal Villa

Commissioned by King Maximilian II of Bavaria, the Royal Villa was built according to the designs of architect Ludwig Lange and completed in 1853. It served as a summer residence for Maximilian II and later for his sons Otto and Ludwig II, who spent their holidays there between 1853 and 1863. However, an anecdote from the park is said to have caused Ludwig II to develop an aversion to Berchtesgaden from 1857 onwards, which kept him from further visits to the villa after his father's death in 1864. The villa was used by Prince Regent Ludwig until 1918. From 1922, the Wittelsbacher Ausgleichsfonds took over its administration before the property was sold to a private individual in 1975. As early as the 1920s, parts of the building were converted into apartments.
