Kollegiatstift Altötting

The origins of the Collegiate Church of Altötting date back to 876/877, when King Carloman founded the Ötting Monastery and transferred the Altötting Palatine Chapel and Mattsee Abbey to it. Carloman found his final resting place here in 880, as did his son Arnulf of Carinthia in 898. A collegiate church, dedicated to Saints Maximilian and Felicitas, emerged shortly after its foundation. Although the monastery may have survived the Hungarian invasions of the early 10th century, monastic life ceased by the 11th century at the latest. Around 1228, Duke Louis the Kelheimer initiated the refoundation as the Collegiate Church of Altötting, staffed with twelve canons under the leadership of a provost and dean. In 1231, Archbishop Eberhard of Salzburg confirmed the collegiate church and obliged the canons to adhere to the Rule of Aachen. Construction of a new collegiate church, a three-aisled Romanesque basilica, began as early as 1228 and was consecrated in 1245. Due to increasing pilgrimages, the construction of the current collegiate parish church of St. Philip and James with its associated cloister became necessary at the end of the 15th century, completed in 1511. In 1491, Pope Innocent VIII permitted the introduction of the less strict Passau Rite. Wars led to a decline in the number of canons, which was later increased and supplemented. In 1803, the Collegiate Church was dissolved during secularization. In 1930, it was re-established without its own assets.
