Church

The Collegiate Church of St. Cassius in Bonn, a historic monastery, is closely linked to the development of what is now Bonn Minster. This significant institution in North Rhine-Westphalia, which was part of the Archdiocese of Cologne, served for centuries as a central religious and cultural site in the region. Gothic architecture characterizes the image of this once influential collegiate church.

History+

The origins of the Cassius Collegiate Church date back to the late 7th century. It was built over a Roman memorial site, believed to house the tombs of the martyrs Cassius and Florentius. An initial stone hall building was erected in the mid-6th century, serving as a burial site until the end of the 8th century and undergoing continuous expansion. From the late 7th century onwards, the building was considered the burial church of the martyrs and attracted pilgrims. A deed of donation from 691/692 mentions Giso as the abbot of the “Basilica sancta Cassii et Florentii”. Over time, the community of clerics grew, leading to further structural changes. From the 8th century, increasing endowments are documented, solidifying the establishment of the Cassius Collegiate Church by the late 8th century at the latest. The “Basilica” became the collegiate church “St. Cassius and Florentius”. In the 11th century, the church was demolished to make way for Bonn Minster. The collegiate church itself was dissolved in 1802.
