St. Georg Oberzell

The monastery of St. George in Oberzell was established in the late 9th century, initially conceived as a Benedictine monastery. It quickly evolved into an important religious center, closely linked to the larger Reichenau Abbey. In the 10th century, the collegiate church experienced a golden age, during which the famous Ottonian wall paintings depicting biblical scenes were created. It was later converted into a collegiate foundation and maintained its significance until the secularization, which led to the dissolution of the monastic community.

The Collegiate Church of St. George is situated on Reichenau Island in Lake Constance, near the city of Konstanz in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The island itself is known for its rich history and its status as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Today, the former Collegiate Church of St. George functions as a parish church and a popular destination for visitors eager to admire its historical architecture and well-preserved wall paintings. It continues to serve as a place of worship and cultural events.
