Collegiate Church (active)
Kollegiatstift St. Johannes Baptist, Regensburg

The Collegiate Church of St. John the Baptist in Regensburg, a historic monastery, was founded in 1127 and has been continuously in operation ever since. It is one of the few collegiate churches in Bavaria that survived secularization. Its history is closely intertwined with the development of the city of Regensburg and the diocese.
History+
The foundation of St. John's Abbey took place in 1127, presumably by Bishop Konrad I of Regensburg, initially as an Augustinian canons' monastery. This early phase lasted until around 1290, before the abbey was transformed into a collegiate church. In the 13th century, the adherence to the Augustinian Rule loosened, and around 1290, the communal life as an order was abandoned. However, the abbey continued to exist as a collegiate church, whose constitution was strongly based on that of the Collegiate Church of the Old Chapel. It survived the secularization of 1803 and Regensburg's transition to Bavaria in 1810, making it one of only four collegiate churches in Bavaria that continue to exist today. King Ludwig I confirmed the abbey's existence in 1826.
