Study church

The Collegiate Church of St. John in Freising, a historic monastery on the Cathedral Hill, is a remarkable architectural monument in Bavaria. It was dedicated to the patronage of John the Baptist and played an important role in the religious life of the region.

History+

The foundation of the collegiate church took place in 1319 by Konrad III. der Sendlinger, the then Bishop of Freising. The occasion for this was the new construction of St. John's Church, which served as the sacred building for the collegiate church. A central task of the collegiate chapter was to pray for the salvation of the souls of the deceased Bishops of Freising. The collegiate church consisted of a provost, a dean, and six canons. In the course of secularization, the collegiate church was dissolved in 1803. The associated church, built between 1319 and 1321, was located west of Freising Cathedral and formed part of the northern boundary of the Cathedral Courtyard. After the dissolution of the collegiate church, the church temporarily served as a hay barn, with much of its original furnishings being lost. The former altarpiece, depicting the Preaching of John the Baptist in the Wilderness, later found its way to Würzburg Cathedral. In 1841, the church was re-established as a study church. The Gothic building is characterized by a high three-aisled interior with a ribbed vault. The Fürstengang (Princely Corridor) runs above the southern aisle, and remnants of wall paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries are still visible on the walls.
