Kollegiatstift St. Martin, Zyfflich/Kranenburg

The foundation of St. Martin's Collegiate Church took place at the beginning of the 11th century by Count Balderich of Drenthe and his wife Adela of Elten. They dedicated the institution to Saint Martin of Tours. Initially, the collegiate church was an important seat within the Archdeaconry of Xanten, and its provosts were often found in the entourage of the Archbishops of Cologne in the High Middle Ages. In 1117, a Count of Kleve was first documented as the Vogt of the collegiate church, which subsequently led to repeated conflicts between the canons and the counts, as the latter appropriated collegiate church properties. In the 13th century, the Counts of Kleve built the castle and town of Kranenburg on lands belonging to the collegiate church. In 1297, the canons had to acknowledge the independence of the parish of Kranenburg. In 1436, Duke Adolf II of Kleve relocated the collegiate church to Kranenburg, to the local parish church, which was rebuilt during these decades with funds from the Kranenburg pilgrimage of the Holy Cross. This decision served both the security of the canons within the walled city and the duke's desire to strengthen his influence over the collegiate church. St. Martin's Collegiate Church continued to exist in Kranenburg until its secularization in 1802. A well-known provost in the 16th century was the humanist Johann von Vlatten.

The Collegiate Church of St. Martin was initially located in Zyfflich and later in Kranenburg, both places in the Kleve region, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

The original collegiate church in Zyfflich, which underwent numerous alterations and reconstructions over the centuries, is still valued today as an important testimony to Ottonian architecture in the Rhineland.
