Collegiate Monastery of Our Lady in the Old Chapel

The first foundation of the collegiate church by King Louis the German took place in 875, but it quickly fell into disrepair. A crucial refoundation occurred in 1002 by King Henry II, who was later canonized. Since this time, the collegiate church has existed continuously. Even the secularization in 1802/03 and Regensburg's incorporation into Bavaria in 1810 did not lead to its dissolution. Tradition holds that the current collegiate church stands on the site of a Roman Juno temple and is considered the oldest church in Bavaria, from which the Christianization of the country is said to have originated. A Marian pilgrimage possibly developed as early as the 13th century, but is only clearly documented in the 17th century.
