Deutschherrenkapelle Saarbrücken

The Commandery of St. Elisabeth was likely founded in 1227, initiated by Count Simon III of Saarbrücken, who had participated in the Fifth Crusade. In 1236, Bishop Johann von Apremont of Metz confirmed the foundation. The founder's daughters, Countess Lorette and her sister Mathilde, significantly contributed to equipping the commandery with additional properties. From the 15th century onwards, the commandery experienced a period of decline, culminating in 1532 with the removal of Landkomtur Dietrich von Nassau. His successor, Geiselbart Schenk von Schmidtburg, initiated a new beginning, evident in the construction of a new residential wing completed in 1561. Despite the introduction of the Reformation in the County of Saarbrücken in 1575, the possessions of the Teutonic Order, as an immediate imperial institution, remained untouched. In the wake of the French Revolution, the commandery was dissolved in 1793, and its property was auctioned off. Since 1896, the entire ensemble has been owned by the city of Saarbrücken.

The historic monastery is located in the Saarbrücken regional association in Saarland, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 215 meters above sea level.

Today, the Commandery of St. Elisabeth is a protected architectural monument. The ensemble includes the Teutonic Knights' Chapel from the 13th century, the tithe barn from 1738, and the Deutschhaus, which originally served as the Komtur's residence and was built between 1557 and 1561. The tithe barn has been used as a kindergarten since 2009. The Deutschhaus, which underwent significant reconstruction between 1953 and 1959, now serves as an administrative building for a youth welfare center.
