Kommende Tempelhof

Village church

The Commandery Tempelhof, a historic monastery, is located in the city of Berlin, Germany, and is protected as a listed building. This complex played a significant role in the founding of the surrounding villages and the development of the region.

History+

The Commandery Tempelhof was founded around 1200 by the Knights Templar and encompassed the villages of Tempelhof, Mariendorf, and Marienfelde, as well as a farm in Rixdorf and an outpost in Treptow. The central point of this commandery was a castle-like commandery court in Tempelhof, at the heart of which stood the commandery church, known today as the Tempelhof Village Church, which has been preserved despite considerable war damage. After the dissolution of the Knights Templar in 1312, the Commandery was transferred to the Knights Hospitaller in 1318. The Hospitallers sold the property rights to the cities of Berlin-Cölln in 1435 but retained feudal sovereignty. It was not until after the secularization of the orders in 1810 that the entire property complex passed into unrestricted private ownership. The main building of the commandery court, which was converted into a manor in 1598, served as the local administrative building of Tempelhof from 1863 until its demolition around 1890.

Location+

The Commandery Tempelhof is situated in the southern part of Berlin on the Teltow plateau. The original commandery court was located on the southern edge of the village of Tempelhof, in a prominently protected elevated position between what were once four lakes, two of which still exist today in Alter Park and Lehnepark.

On site+

The former commandery church now serves as the Tempelhof Village Church and continues to mark the historical center of the commandery court. The complex is protected as a listed building.
