Konradsburg Castle

Konradsburg Castle in Saxony-Anhalt transformed from a defensive structure into a spiritual center. Originally built to protect the imperial estate of Harz, it evolved into a Benedictine monastery.
History+
First documented in 1021, Konradsburg Castle served to protect the imperial estate of Harz. It lacked typical defensive towers or a keep. After 1120, the lords of Konradsburg left the site and founded Falkenstein Castle in the Selke Valley, subsequently calling themselves Falkensteiner. A Benedictine monastery was then established at Konradsburg. It is believed that this conversion was an act of atonement for a murder committed by Egeno II of Konradsburg around 1080 against Count Adalbert II of Ballenstedt. During the Peasants' War, the monks, who had belonged to the Carthusian order since 1477, abandoned the monastery in 1526. In 1712, the complex was converted into an agricultural domain, which existed until 1945. After World War II, Konradsburg Castle increasingly fell into disrepair until committed citizens began working for its preservation in 1982, founding the Förderkreis Konradsburg e. V. in 1990, which now manages the site.
