Krenkinger Castle

The first written mention of the castle appears in a Hewener Urbar from the 15th century. It is presumed that an earlier high medieval structure already existed on this site. Little is known about the early owners and a possible connection to the Lords of Krenkingen. Around 1494, Engen and thus the castle passed to Heinrich V von Lupfen. Renovations took place between 1536 and 1555, including the construction of a stair tower and the raising of the south wing, as evidenced by coats of arms. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was set on fire in 1640 by Swedish and Hohentwiel soldiers, after which the north wing was rebuilt at a lower height. In 1800, it was plundered and devastated by French troops.
