Crusader Castle Amouda
In the village of Gökçedam in Turkey, the Crusader castle of Amouda, now a ruin, rises on a rock cone. The fortress played a role at a crossroads in the Çukurova Plain.
History+
The exact builders of Amouda Castle are not known. In 1145, it was captured by Thoros II, ruler of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia. Around 1211/12, Leo II handed over the castle to the Teutonic Order, which strengthened it. In 1266, Amouda fell victim to the Mamluks under Sultan Baibars I, who conquered and plundered the fortress.

Amouda Castle is located in the village of Gökçedam, which belongs to the central district of Osmaniye Province in the Akdeniz (Mediterranean) region of Turkey. It stands at an elevation of approximately 64 meters above sea level.
