The Crusader Castle of Aruad, a remarkable fortress, stands on the Syrian island of Aruad in the eastern Mediterranean. As the last bastion of the Crusaders in the Near East, it bears witness to a turbulent history and is today a popular destination.
History+
Aruad Island was already settled in the 1st millennium BC and developed into an important Phoenician trading city. During the Crusades, Aruad was expanded into a powerful island fortress by the Knights Templar. After the loss of Château Pèlerin in 1291, Aruad served as the last stronghold of the Crusaders. From 1300 to 1302, the Templars, supported by the Mongols, attempted to retake lost territories on the mainland. However, this attempt failed due to a counterattack by the Mamluks, leading to the siege and eventual abandonment of the island in September 1302.

Aruad Castle is located on Aruad Island off the coast of the Tartus Governorate in Syria, approximately 9 meters above sea level.

Today, Aruad Island is entirely built over by the fishing village of the same name. The old fortress is well preserved and serves as the town center. It can be visited by tourists, with the former defensive walls along the waterline, though removed, still discernible in their course.
