The origins of Belveer Fortress date back to Roman times, when a fortification was built at this strategically important point to secure the road to Jerusalem. During the Crusader period, the fortress known today as Belveer was erected here. Its importance was revived towards the end of the British Mandate in Palestine. In April 1948, during the Israeli War of Independence, the fortress was fiercely contested in battles between Arab irregulars and Jewish forces. After changing hands multiple times, Belveer eventually fell into Jewish hands and played a role in securing supply routes to Jerusalem.
