The Crusader castle of Cafarlet, a historic fortress, is located in present-day Israel, near the village of Kafr Lam in the Haifa region. This complex, whose origins may predate the arrival of the Crusaders, once served to secure important coastal routes.
History+
The architecture of Cafarlet Castle, with its rectangular layout and four corner towers, suggests a construction style common during the Umayyad Caliphate, indicating a possible Muslim origin before 1099. After the Battle of Hattin in 1187, Cafarlet likely fell to Sultan Saladin but was later recaptured during the Third Crusade. In October 1213, the Lord of Caesarea transferred the castle to the Hospitaller Order as security for a loan of 1,000 bezants. In 1232, it was finally sold to the order for 16,000 Saracen bezants, with the higher price possibly due to expansion after a raid in 1227. The Hospitallers transferred Cafarlet to the Knights Templar in 1255. After being conquered by the Mamluks in 1265, the castle apparently returned briefly to Crusader hands before finally falling to the Mamluks in 1291.
