Castellum Regis was first documented in 1160, when it was owned by King Baldwin III of Jerusalem. Later, in 1182, Baldwin IV is mentioned as the owner of the fortress. After 1187, the castle fell into Saladin's hands. At the beginning of the 13th century, Castellum Regis changed hands again, passing to the Teutonic Order.
