The first documented mention of the Crusader castle Hurvat Burgata occurred in 1158, when it was recorded as being in the possession of the Abbey of St. Mary Lanita. Between 1187 and 1191, the fortress passed into the hands of the Knights Hospitaller. Later, from 1236, the Knights Templar took control of the complex. The castle met its end in 1265 when it was destroyed by the Mamluks.
