The Crusader castle Le Saffran, a historic fortress, is located in the city of Schefar'am in northern Israel. It played an important role during the Crusades and served as a strategic point for securing trade routes.
History+
The origins of the settlement of Schefar'am date back to the 2nd century. During the Crusader era, the Templars built a castle here, which they named Le Saffran. Its main task was to monitor the important connecting road between Acre and Nazareth. In July 1187, the fortress was captured by the troops of Sultan Saladin. Saladin later used it as a base for relief attacks during the siege of Acre from 1189 to 1191. As part of Frederick II's Crusade, the castle peacefully returned to Christian possession in 1229. This possession was reconfirmed in the armistice treaties with Sultan Baibars I in 1271 and Sultan Qalawun in 1283. However, by 1291 at the latest, Le Saffran finally fell to the Muslim Mamluks.
