Kloster Steinhaus

The origins of the monastery date back to 1298, when it was founded as a monastery of the Canons Regular of the Holy Cross. Prior to this, Count Adolf V of Berg had gifted the order the Oberhof Steinhaus and a chapel. His brother Konrad I confirmed this donation in the same year. As the original location, situated on a busy trade and military road, was unsuitable for contemplative monastic life, the counts extended their donation to include the Beyenberg. There, alongside the new monastery, Beyenburg Castle was also built. The late Gothic monastery church of St. Mary Magdalene, which still stands today, was completed in 1485. For centuries, the monastery took on important tasks in pastoral care, education, and poor relief for the surrounding communities. In 1804, the monastery was secularized, its assets nationalized, and its library destroyed. Many of the monastic buildings were demolished. However, a re-establishment of the Order of the Holy Cross at the same location took place in 1964.

The Kreuzherrenstift Steinhaus is located in Beyenburg, a district of Wuppertal, in the Ennepe-Ruhr region of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

Today, the Kreuzherrenkloster Steinhaus is the only German monastery of the Canons Regular of the Holy Cross and an active place of monastic life. The late Gothic monastery church is still preserved.
