Kreuzkirche

The origins of the Kreuzkirche date back to the 12th century, when a Romanesque basilica was built on this site. Originally known as Nikolaikirche, it received its current name in the 14th century after the donation of a cross relic. The building underwent transformations, including Gothic extensions in the 15th century and a redesign in the Renaissance style from 1579. Repeatedly affected by fires, most recently in 1760 during the Seven Years' War, the church was always rebuilt. A dispute between Baroque and Neoclassical designs characterized the reconstruction in the late 18th century. After another fire in 1897, the interior received a Neo-Baroque design with Art Nouveau elements.
